About Emily

Emily grew up in the Lake District, where her school had a fantastic art textiles department. She spent every spare moment exploring and experimenting with fabrics, textures and form.

Studying for a Fine Art degree at Edinburgh College of Art gave her a passion for constructed textiles, and she specialised in tapestry. Emily then completed a City and Guilds Level 3 qualification in Upholstery at Burnley College of Construction, and alongside this she was an apprentice with the established traditional craftsman Steven Ball in Cumbria.

Emily is a Leeds-based designer and upholsterer with a keen eye for design, colours and textures, and above all she is passionate about restoring quality furniture.

Our team works in a beautiful Grade II listed studio on Weetwood Lane in Far Headingley, where we spend our days restoring and revamping. We look forward to hearing from you!

How we work

Combined visions from our customers and the expertise of our professional team.

  1. We listen to your vision

When we come into your home we listen to your vision first and foremost, and we love to find out how we can help you with your upholstery needs.

Our homes are our sanctuaries: the most important places for us to feel calm, safe, cosy, relaxed and inspired. They give us a place to recoup our energies, entertain our friends and families, and be the art gallery of our own worlds.

Traditional and contemporary upholstery

Upholstery is the work of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers. The word comes from the Middle English upholder, a tradesman who held up his goods.

Traditional

Traditional upholstery uses materials like coil springs, animal hair, coir, straw and hay, hessians, linen scrims and wadding, with mainly traditional hand sewn techniques, and we always use hammer and tacks. Traditional upholstery often takes much longer than contemporary upholstery, and there can be a price difference between the two techniques.

Contemporary

Modern upholstery can involve cutting edge techniques and an expansive range of elements, including rubber foam, elastic webs and synthetic Dacron. The elements come in layers, allowing for a faster application and flexible shapes.

Upholstery classes

We offer a “Bring your own Project” day class on the last Saturday of each month, held in the workshop at Weetwood Studios. We teach you how to re-upholster your own project and equip you with skills so that you can continue with other projects at home.

Bring a project that is achievable in one day: for example a dining chair, a footstool, a piano stool or a small child’s chair. We provide all the tools, equipment and materials you will need. You just need to bring your project along with the fabric you wish to use.

  • Lunch, tea, coffee and cake provided on the day
  • We take a maximum of six students, so be quick to book your place

Emily and the team upholstered a very tired chair in our office, we were amazed by the results. She was great to communicate with…punctual and the work itself is top notch. We would be loathed to buy anything new seeing the results of this chair. Absolutely stunning. Emily sent us these photos from the workshop. Communication was wonderful

Emily made a beautiful seat cushion for my porch. I am delighted with it. It fits perfectly and I received 2 complimentary cushions Emily made with left over fabric.

But on top of that she helped adapt my spaniels dog bed that didn’t have a removable cushion! She worked this out, cut and sewed it while I was in the workshop and as you can see Tilly is very pleased with the outcome ❤️

Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. A lovely and very professional lady to deal with .

I'm absolutely thrilled with the incredible work done by Emily Farncombe Upholstery! They brought my vintage 1980s Habitat sofa back to life, and it looks better than ever. From new webbing to top-notch foam and stunning new bottle green leather Futura leather in Lancashire, they spared no detail. Emily's craftsmanship is top-class - she clearly cares deeply about her work and the customer's vision. They worked with me to match the leather perfectly to our interior, and the result is just stunning. If you need upholstery work done, look no further! 😊"

We recently had an ottoman upholstered by Emily which previously belonged to a family member who had sadly passed. We couldn’t be happier with the result and were really impressed by the attention to detail and precision. The ottoman now looks beautiful and what was previously hidden away is now in our living room.

As a lovely extra touch, she also made a couple of cushions from the leftover fabric, which really tied everything together and added something personal and thoughtful to the job.

Overall, a brilliant service from start to finish. We’d happily recommend her to anyone looking for quality upholstery work with a personal, skilled approach.
